Please submit your articles of no less than 500 and no more than 1500 words. Satire can be shorter if necessary. Strong opinions and satire are welcomed but please refrain from being mean-spirited and insulting. Please provide sources for your statistical claims as we have taken to adding footnotes to articles to promote informed discussion. We will not publish any articles without them.
By submitting articles, you give us the permission to post it online with your name (or pseudonym you specify) for an all eternity, or as long as DemocracyMeansYou.com and Ian Kleinfeld (collectively referred to as DMY from here on, in all sections of this agreement) remains live, whichever comes first. You maintain all copyrights to the work and agree to be solely liable for its content (i.e., if someone decides to sue over libel or slander, not too likely). DMY reserves the right to make editorial changes, corrections, deletions, and commentary where appropriate, although it is our policy to refrain from edits that would change the meaning of your writing. You may decline publication if you feel our editing has not properly represented the intention of your work or style.
By submitting artwork, animations, etc., you give us the permission to post it online with your name (or pseudonym you specify) for an all eternity, or as long as DemocracyMeansYou.com (DMY) remains live, whichever comes first. You maintain all copyrights to the work and agree to be solely liable for its content (i.e., if someone decides to sue over libel or slander, not too likely).
By submitting ideas for T-shirts or bumperstickers, you give us exclusive permission to print and sell the stickers and/or tees or other merchandise in unlimited quantity in our online retail store, in person, or to resellers anywhere in the world. You authorize copyright to DMY.
Due to the difficulty in managing royalties, and the fact that quite honestly, we don't get much profit from this enterprise, as of 1/2004 we pay with in kind payment only. If we decide to use your idea, you are welcome to 20 stickers or buttons of any design, and an additonal 10 of your idea for a total of 30 pieces. Only ideas that sell more than 1000 units in the first year will be renegotiated to give you an 8% royalty after the initial 1000, paid annually.
You agree to indemnify DMY of all damages or claims in regards to the idea outside of the above amounts. You agree to accept DMY's report of our records of the number of units sold related to your idea. DMY retains the right to cancel the manufacture and sales of any product at any time for any reason.
We invite you to add our submissions address to your e-mail lists if you regularly submit to a large number of publications. However, we ask that you only use it for sumbmissions, not for e-mailing us pictures of your nephew or Internet jokes or the like.
We eventually read everything but we get at least 10-20 submissions a week. Don't take it personally if we don't get back to you or don't publish your writing.
For all other submissions, the closest relevant paragraph will apply.
By submitting any of the above, or any other works or ideas, you agree to the terms above.
We recommend you print out this agreement for your records, as it will change from time to time. The version of the agreement in effect at the time we accept your submission will apply.
