This is honest-to-God true:

The Friday, May 03, 2002 News Hour with Jim Lehrer saw a nice bit of irony that even Dennis Miller couldn't have improved upon.

Airline industry guests Captain Lucky and Flight Attendant Patricia Friend discussed their rationales for allowing pilots and flight crews to carry lethal weapons on commercial flights.

Ms. Friend insisted that her Flight Attendant's group would not support Captain Lucky's Pilot's association having firearms if Flight Attendants weren't at least allowed stun guns and self-defense training.

Captain Lucky, on the other hand, felt that it was too dangerous for arms to be on-board outside the cockpit and spoke longingly of the days in the 60s when he was encouraged to carry heat while flying through a "secret" program started by the Feds.

Not surprisingly, Ms. Friend was quite affable discussing her lethal demands and Captain Lucky has been charmed enough to have never been hijacked.

Thank you Jim Lehrer.
