Merry Christmas, baby!
An update to “Where are the sacred chickens?”
The Supreme Court ruled right before Christmas that the Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, also known as the UDV, ought to be permitted to use their traditional ahuarasca tea in their Christmas services.
This ruling in the face of the Bush administration's opposition ought to encourage those of us for whom religious freedom is more than a mere euphemism for a repressive theocracy.
A full, permanent ruling is still pending--keep your eye on Ashcroft v. O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, A-469.
The UPI reported that "the Christian Legal Society, the National Association of Evangelicals and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. all filed briefs supporting UDV."
Apparently there are plenty of Christians who recognize the value of religious freedom.
Good for them.
