Notes from a Small Investor
Why Democrats are better for business
I’m a small scale investor, trying to put a little money away to supplement my retirement income so I won’t be a burden to society in my old age.. I can’t say I’ve done too badly with my investments, and by all the pundits’ report, I should avid flag-waving Republican.
Wrong
Bush is ruining my portfolio. The tax cuts that Bush has enacted are meaningless. I can safely say I will never earn a salary high enough to get any tax breaks.. I realize Bush touts his program as a way of helping the little “Mom and Pop” investor. But all I can say is that “Mom and Pop” have to be pretty wealthy to get anything from Mad King George Besides I clearly remember what Bush did to Harkens Oil. I can remember what happened to Halliburton when Dick Cheney was CEO. Do you really think I trust these Crooks, Exorbitantly Overpaid with my money??????.
No way. In order for my investments to grow, I need the following
1. Corporations must have transparent accounting. The Sarbanes legislation helped some, but the SEC is too prone to interference by wealthy corporate money boys to instill much confidence from me.
2. The middle and lower classes need more disposable income. President Bush touts tax cuts, but the lion’s share of these tax cuts go to the wealthy. In the mean time the average wage earner must cope with the soaring costs of health insurance, gasoline, college tuition.. Furthermore, corporations are eliminating higher paying jobs for lower paying jobs. All of these factors mean less money to buy the products from the companies I’m investing in, causing the value of my investments to collapse
3. I want to see drastic reforms of the WTO, the World Bank, the IMF and the GATT to ensure a decent living standard for every human being on the planet. .Currently these organizations condemn the vast majority of the world’s population to a level of abject poverty, despair and death. As a result, fewer people can afford to buy American products - regardless of how low the American dollar sinks on the international exchange.. More people with more money means greater market for American products. Neither President Bush nor the righteous Republican Party seem to understand this.
4. I want more government regulation and plus the right of individuals (and groups of individuals) to sue major corporations for damages. I want consumer protection plus a clearly defined set of healthy and safety standards devised by consumer advocates, not wealthy corporations. The label “ Made in America” should itself be a warranty, not warning Lax consumer protection simply creates a glut of unmarketable merchandise which damages my investment returns. 5. I want to see better education and medical care Preventative medicine actually saves money down the road. Better mental health counseling results in fewer abused children, and consequently fewer serial killers and rapists to lock up. More scholarships and grant money serves as an incentive for inner city youth to pursue educational excellence instead of drug dealing. It also enables young people to start businesses, careers, and families faster.
6. We desperately need family planning. The planet cannot adequately accommodate 15 or 20 billion people. The current bans and restrictions the Bush Administration places on family planning clinics represent the dementia of a diseased mind. And although Christian conservatives may scream about abortions, the current rate of infant mortality in the world is really a gruesome form of reverse abortion. In this way, Pro-life really mean Pro-death.
7. Finally, we need a sustainable economy. Our current economy, based on fossil fuel, is suicidal. In the near future, we face two catastrophic scenarios. We will either run out of oil, or we’ll gas ourselves to death. These options do not bode well for a healthy economy. In addition, t he disastrous effects of global warming will destroy every one’s portfolio.
After examining the platforms of both the Republican and Democratic parties, there is no guessing whom I’m going to vote for. Call me a liberal, lefty or girlie man if you wish. Who cares? I can’t help but think of Martin Luther King words. The only true form of sel-preservation is other preservation. “I cannot be what I want to be unless you can be what you want to be.” We are all our brothers’ keepers, and truly healthy economy revolves around this principle. After all, it was Jesus Christ who told the rich man to sell all he had and give to the poor. Karl Marx was just an atheistic copy cat. . And if we must tax the wealthy more in order to create this kind of economy, so be it. The money you earn is not really your money, each person owes something back to society in direct proportion to what that person earns. That idea, incidentally, did not come from Karl Marx either. It came from Adam Smith.
I want returns on my portfolio. For that reason, I will vote a straight Democratic ticket.
